Following the death of Marcus Aurelius in March 180 AD, a number of posthumous coins were issued in Rome under Commodus. The designs were very similar across silver and bronze and most centered on the Emperor's apotheosis or the cremation ceremony.

These three sestertii from my collection depict the funeral pyre (which looks a bit like a wedding cake), an eagle rising from the pyre and the divine Marcus riding a giant eagle.

Nice collection, the red tray make the coins pop out more, unlike my dark blue trays with the very debased silver coins.

Very interesting series of coins. Do you know if all three were minted contemporaneously or if Commodus had them come out as a series?

Hi Spence

As there's no evidence we can only speculate. For what its worth I'd say they were initially distributed as a free gift at Marcus's funeral or the commemorative games Commodus put on.
