I just pulled this out of a roll and thought to get some opinions. I have seen them before I think but can't remember what this is called. Thanks all.

I would believe that, except it isn't all scratched up. The copper could've worn naturally maybe?

It's copper-plated zinc since mid 1982. The plating tones naturally. Toning

Thanks Crazyb0, I misunderstood what he was talking about. it does look like it's been buffed. The high spots on the coin took the brunt of it, right down to the zinc. The other buffed area looks to have been discolored. Hard to tell how deep.

Looks more like a case of the plating burned off with a cigarette lighter. Note the bumpy surface, that is the original plating that is now discolored gray/black looking now. If the plating was missing, then fields would be smooth. PSD

Quote: Note the bumpy surface, that is the original plating that is now discolored gray/black looking now. If the plating was missing, then fields would be smooth. PSD You're a smart man Coop, and as always part detective too. There's no disputing the above quote. The plating on the high spots is missing, but not on the lower areas. The lower areas are discolored. A case has been made for buffing, and a case for fire. I could think of a half dozen other ways also, but only the abuser of this coin could know for sure.

You guys have to look at alot of coins to be able to tell what could be wrong with them. For me I think I know more than I think I do. Excitement however overrides common sense sometimes and I see what I want to. Did that make sense

Sure does. What my full Swede father used to say..."Ze olter ve gits, ze schmarter ve gits!" As I tell my grandsons, "Old Men Rule while Young Boys Drool!"

I dont think its even burned. Maybe buffed now it has been mentioned. I see no evidence of fire or grinding. The "circular" patterns are actually abrasions on the coin flip.

Find another one John, hopefully it'll be a mint error or variety. Varieties and errors have "tells" that we can diagnose relatively easy. Diagnosing coins that had something happen to them after they left the mint is largely guesswork.
