While I do understand that finding the worst coin may be quite the challenge (they aren't sold separately that often, one has to buy bulk lots, or sets from shady private persons who don't offer returns as opposed to well-known dealers, some coin shops - at least here - don't even have "junk bins"), this does absolutely nothing for me.
I don't find it strange if someone limits themselves to low grades due to lack of funds or an area not being their main focus (as mentioned by Spence). However, by no means would I pay more for something that's graded 1 than for the same type graded 6 or 8.
A bit off topic but I wonder if I should have bought the bunch of banknotes (which would be better described as tattered rags) the local coin store offered me last week ($5 for about 20 pieces). I haven't heard of collecting worst currency yet but it makes you think whether such trend may also appear one day.

Contrary to what others have said, I definitely would not call this collecting the "worst examples." I think a coin that is harshly cleaned, holed, and corroded (in no matter which grade) would be much worse. This is just collecting the lowest graded example—something that can be quite hard to find while being undamaged and still identifiable.  Now, I must say that I love lowball coins. And your set, BillN, is looking quite nice!  |

I love lowball coins, especially those that are problem free with honest wear. They are hard to find and usually carry a premium. They have a charm about them. I really like this set. I have a 1921 Peace dollar that I grade po-1 along with an 1806 Half Cent. I've thought about doing what BillN is doing and I've found it's actually harder to find these lowball coins than other circulated examples. Great work to the OP! |

BTW...it's disheartening to see a new member, or any member for that matter, post a collection that they are proud of and have other members comment about it negatively. That in my opinion is not cool. I personally don't collect or like a lot of the things other people collect in this forum but that's the beauty of coin collecting in that everyone is entitled to collect whatever fancies them.

First of all,  to the forum BillN. I have not looked for lowballs myself yet, but it seems to be getting more popular. As a few have said so far, collect what you enjoy collecting. I can see the challenge in getting a P01 that has a legible date and MM. Stick around for a while, there are a lot of different collectors here who know something about almost every aspect of collecting coins and currency. I know you are not the only one interested in lowball sets. I think it is a unique twist and may make it worth buying junk silver bags too. |

BillN - I seem to be at the center of this, which is upsetting of course, even to an old fart. Let me ask, would you prefer that no one do anything but praise your collection?  Is that really what you want? I did not criticize you or anything you showed, but simply said that this approach to the hobby did not appeal to me. For the life of me I cannot see a problem with that, and would not give a second thought to an opinion from you of any kind on something I showed (happens all the time). Please do not leave this wonderful forum over something like this. Frog |

Frog, try this approach...if something doesn't appeal to you then don't post on the thread. I don't collect modern coins but I don't go on those threads and say that their coins/collections don't appeal to me. That would be rude. You don't have to post your opinion on every thread.

His skin probably was a little thin for the internet, but at the same time I do agree with him that forums are filled with far to many people who want people to collect the exact same way that they do. If someone isn't interested in a certain area there is really no need to post a comment saying so, that is just commenting to comment especially with no real insight about value or difficulty. Do you really want every thread to be nothing but "Not my series", "This doesn't do it for me", "These are ugly" ect. |

Personally, I think BillN threw out the baby with the bathwater here, and was being a little too sensitive. I don't think there is anything wrong with posting on a forum about something you're not interested in, even if you say so. If everyone here only posted in threads they were interested in, this would be like one of those other coin forums where the same 3 people do all the posting, posts are only made every few days, and some threads are dead for years. Imagine a CCF where jbuck only hung out in the Ike threads for example.
BillN, If you are reading this, don't let this be what caused you to leave. Know that Frog wasn't attacking you or your collection.

While I don't collect them, I think problem free original P01 coins are interesting, especially on coins you wouldn't necessarily expect to see worn down to such a level. Sometimes when I'm in the Photograde app I'll look at some of the lower grade dollar and gold coins and wonder how they got to where they are. Definitely agree they are better looking than some problem coins, regardless of the grade.

In a world of so many collectors worshiping slabbed coins (which I have no interest in, thank you :) )
and where the pocketbook often determines a collector's prominence in the hobby, I certainly appreciated the challenge factor in putting together a classic low ball collection.
