Can I use old unused postage stamps as long as I have the proper amount of postage on a package/envelope?

yes, all stamps issued for use on first-class mail since the Civil War are still valid for postage.

Many (maybe even most) older stamps are worth exactly what you can use them for, but there are of course exceptions. Be careful what you use. Though you could use stamps from the 1860s as postage, it might be better to save them. Better to be safe than sorry if in doubt.

Oh no, I have nothing that old. I have saved some stamps from when I was around 17 (now 31). I used to collect them.
