Does anyone know of coin apprasiers in the gta that can look through an inheirited coin collection?I have no idea what they're worth and there hundreds of them? I assume I'd be charged by hour.

Any large coin shop would give you a verbal appraisal, probably even for nothing. You would be surprised how quickly they can do it.

If you want something in writing there will be a charge, which might be waived if you sell to them.

I'd just buy a Charlton or a "Coin News" and just see if there are any that are being sold at a premium. A dealer will give you about 35/40% or so for most of the stuff. You can buy most of the stuff for 60-70% of what's in Charlton or CCN. Unless you have a whole whack of uncirc coins, it's not worth going to an appraiser first. And whatever you do, don't sell to any dealer or entity that is the first to tell you what they are worth .. get an idea of what you have first .. then go to see someone.

THe biggest problem I'm having is with the grading. The prices vary significantly between them and I'm nowhere close to understanding how to grade. I've looked up most of them, but cant get a real idea what they are worth because of grades. Thats why I was hoping for someone to assign them grades then decide if I want to sell.

ALso did you say a dealer pays roughly 40% of what they are worth? SO theyd pay 40 dollars for a $100 item?

Unless you have a few date coin like a 48 dollar, 21 5 cent, 50 cent then you will get a lot more, old bright red large cents are also easy to sell in high grades but generic years and dates are hard to move

Dealers will pay 35-40% of catalogue, if they need the item and can sell it readily, and as was pointed out they may sell for 60-70% of the catalogue. The price in the catalogue is NOT the same as what they are worth. Catalogue prices tend to be inflated, except for really hot items like rare items in high mint state condition. Essentially you have the retail price and the wholesale price. If it makes any sense to talk about worth, it would be the selling price, which could be either wholesale or retail. Sometimes things can't sell anywhere close to even 70% of the catalogue. These "dogs" may sell for 25-50% of catalogue.

i doubt a dealer will want to sift through a large amount of coins to grade them..depending on your location I would be willing to help you out. send me an email if you like.

I'd try here first. Make up a list of the types of coins you have and the years and post here on CCF.
If there is anything that stands out, I'm sure someone will pipe up and provide you with information and will most certainly ask for a picture. If the coins are mostly silver dollars, for example, you've got at least the silver value. If they are large cents (pennies from earlier than 1920), and in rough shape, you've got less than the cost of an appraisal unless there is a key date or rare variety. That's when the experts here really shine.
My advice is....
If someone left these coins for you, take the time to research what you've got.
Prior to joining here, I was going through some older coins that my grandfather had that I ended up with years ago. I took them to B&W in Brampton (recently closed I believe) and had them looked at. They were world coins and not worth much since none were silver but they are what got me interested in the hobby. Most reputable dealers will at least take a glance through and tell you if anything jumps out as being a grand slam homerun without charging you Anything. They are curious about what you've got as much as you are sometimes. Try to go when they are least busy or call and ask if they'd have a few minutes at an arranged time to go over your coins. Dealers sell the hobby, not just the coins. But they also need to make money. Shop around at a few different dealer and ask questions here.

It will be hard to tell you the value without seeing them. Value will depend on the condition of the coins. For most coins in the 1960s and newer, there isn't much value unless they're in AMAZING condition.

For now, if you have time, see if you have any key dates or rarer varieties by browsing through this site:
http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php

The prices on that site aren't very realistic, but you will get to see what coins/varieties are significantly more valuable.

I'll try to go through your list tonight when I get home. good luck with everything :)

yeah I'm having a hard time understanding what condition they're in. My grading seems to be way off when asked for an opinion. Although the American coins I do pretty well with because PCGS has a photograde website thats extremely helpful. Id be happy to post some pictures if anyone sees any dates that are worth a look.
