I don't believe that I have shown my 3CN to the CCF and would like to see what you think of her in comparison to PCGS. Thank you for your interest and comments!

Tough call. The dies were clearly damaged by a clash. I think this may be a weak struck MS. The vertical lines in the Roman numerals are weak. The right side of the word Liberty is also possibly a worn die. I like this one and would say MS65.

I'm not very good at grading, and this sure is a tough one.
Half of me says MS63, but half says AU58. So somewhere around there.

The high points appear worn, but I'm thinking this is a soft strike issue, rather than circulation. The early nickel composition planchets beat the dies to death in short order with zillions of die cracks and clash marks common.
Looking at this as an uncirculated piece, it has almost no distractions with bag marks and should have warranted a 65 as such.
Even tone with minimal streaking is lovely.
I really like this coin.

There's a lot going on with coin. What appears to be die cracks, grease filled items, general soft strike, polishing and soft clash issues. MS 65?

She's a real beauty! I always liked this coin although I only have two. I know we had the thread about the best eagle on a coin, but if we ever start a thread about the best rendition of Liberty, the 3-cent nickel will be the top of my list.
Grading is tough for me, especially in the higher grades. I am learning. I'm not sure if missing details on the cheek and hair, slight as they are, are from the strike or wear. Given everything else on the coin, I will go with high-AU.

Typical soft strike. Between the small size and the hardness of the CuNi alloy, striking these coins was driving the Mint crazy.

Quote: PCGS gave her an AU58 boo. I still think this is MS. I would be very dissatisfied with that grade. Does the in-hand viewpoint give any credit to the AU grade?

If you purchased that for an AU price, you still did great. Even if someone once breathed on the coin to take it to a 58, it's a lovely example of the type.

Coinfrog, I normally gauge the time to reveal when the thread drops off the front page of recent topics on the left. I will give the next one 48 hours for the unveiling of the results to test for effect.
