Should one think this is original canvas bag toned, or do you think the "artificial toners" could replicate this within a PCGS slab as they do other spectacularly tarnished specimens? I tend to believe it was tarnished this way when slabbed. It seems there are some small dotted areas of toning consistent with canvas bag storage as well. I do wish PCGS photographed submissions. It seems PCGS is gaining a reputation for straight grading AT coins lately so one can't be too sure, IMO. Please post your thoughts, and thanks in advance.

I don't think this is AT. It looks like another coin laid on top of it for many years. I don't think the AT guys would produce a partially toned coin like this. It wouldn't command much of a premium. Do you have a pic of the reverse?

The reverse is relatively tarnish free. I appreciate the observation. Thank you. It's exactly the reason I would pay a premium for this coin.

The toning pattern looks natural and typical of bag toning. The coin is going to command a premium because of the high grade and rainbow toning.

They look naturally toned. I have several examples of naturally toned Morgans. But I do agree that some of slabbed coins seem to be AT that were straight graded. I tend to avoid those.

As a person who enjoys toning and prefers toned coins, id say that the shape and pattern of the toning is consistent with natural toning...

I have a lot of toned Morgans, my favorites are bulleyes, but I have a lot of crescents. Since the common dates don't carry much CDN grey value I have gotten many toned in higher grades 2 sides when possible. The toning on your nice example seems fine imho. I have a few AT coins but most all have been raw, not TPG but that is just the luck I have had I am sure they are out there, most every thing is. Many ATs though tend to be a little obvious and questionable. Does that mean you can't find AT on a certified coin, nope? Well you can find nearly anything including fake Chinese TPG slabs/labels. I think yours is a nice toned coin, but it is jmho. Wish PCGS would do what NGC has done by having pics of submissions for a given cert number. It is hard to counterfeit coins that match the cert pics.

Sure looks naturally toned to me. I see some pull-away on the stars, and that cannot be duplicated by the doctors. Worthy of a small premium. The coins that have been gassed in holders are hideous and look nothing like this.
