I have a coin I am curious to make sure is silver. It is a 50 dollar liberia coin from 2000 and depicts the u.s. civil war with the flags colored in. Has anyone seen a coin like this? It weighs exactly 2 troy ounces. I would like to know if it is .999 silver, Thanks!

Look for any indication of a silver weight or percentage. Such as .999 or 2 ounces or oz.

Hello and welcome.

Your coin is not listed in the world coin catalogues for Liberia. Which makes me think it is an unofficial coinage issue.

Liberia was in a state of civil war in 2000. Less-reputable mints love it when countries break out into civil war and strife; they can go around striking "legal tender coins" in the name of these countries, and there's no way of checking whether or not the coins actually have any legal tender status. Half a dozen mints, mostly based in the USA, struck "coins" with all sorts of designs and themes, most of which have nothing to do with Liberia itself but are aimed purely at collectors in America.

So, given its shadowy origin, if the coin does not actually state on it anywhere, or have any paperwork from the issuing mint, stating that the coin is made of silver, then the best assumption would be that it does not.
