So this first coin I am pretty excited about. It's a Chinese ant nose coin. But that's pretty much all I know about it. I got it for free! Seems to be in really good condition compared to others online. What year would this have been made? I am thinking 400 BC or so. Any input would be great. What would be good way to store something like this to stop corrosion? It's in a flip atm. Weighs 2 grams.

Next are Mauryan "Karshapana from the Taxila mint Circa 187 BC" thanks to Echizento. Does anyone know what the different marks mean? Each weigh 3.5 grams

TypeCoin and AnYangMan are our resident Chinese experts. They've been quiet here lately. Hopefully one of them can weigh in on the ant nose.

The Mauryan coins are indeed punchmarked karshapana, although I would extend the date range to 322-187 BC. The empire came about when an enterprising individual usurped the throne of an existing kingdom, and then conquered the war-torn provinces left behind as Alexander the Great retreated back to the West. They were the largest empire ever to exist in the Indian subcontinent, and incredibly wealthy. The meaning of the punches are lost to history. The single punch on the reverse is theorized to represent the reigning king; I have heard it claimed (but without evidence so take it as you will) that the "caduceus" on your square one corresponds to Ashoka the Great:

Hi Spartcom5.
I'm not an expert on ant nose coins by any means, but I have one similar to yours. 400 BC or so is about right. Mine lacks the "eyebrow" on top which yours appears to have, but is otherwise identical, and according to this webpage from Calgary Coins is from the Kingdom of Chu, one of the largest and most powerful of the Warring States (the first to declare formal independence from the weakened Zhou Dynasty); it has an interesting history.

Hope this helps!

There are multiple educational threads here on CCF about ant nose coins. Use the search function in the upper left corner of your screen and you will find them. Here is my favorite:

How should I store something like these? Are Saflips good enough?

I store mine in 2x2s, just like all my other coins.

Nice ant nose, and it appears to be genuine. The patina has been stripped, but the character is still very clear. 2g seems heavy for the variety with the bar on top (if I am reading your images correctly).

But my article that Spence linked will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about these coins.
