Is ICG a reputable TPG? I don't usually hear about them as I do PCGS, NGC, and ANACS.

Yes, there are some nice coins that were in ICG holders which I have crossed over to equivalent grades.

I was looking at a Canadian 50 cent piece that looked nice in an ICG holder. I would bust it out anyways. Best one I have seen for the price.

The general consensus in my experience is that for the time being ICG is not as conservative in their grading as PCGS/NGC and therefore ICG slabs are seen as less desirable in the marketplace. That aside I think they are just as much a valid TPG as any of the others.

Thanks all, I just went ahead and made an offer and it was accepted for the ICG slab!

As with ANY grading service certified coin, the coin has to stand on it's own merits. All of the top five are good at authentication, other than that what is on the label is meaningless. Look at the coin and make your own decision about it.

I've had great luck crossing nice ones over the years. They are usually a point below PCGS or NGC, depending on the type, but undergrades can also be found.

The average ICG coin is ok, but as usual, always buy the coin.........
I get leery when they have Lincoln cents in MS67 holders though.

They're okay for older coins, I wouldn't buy any grades with a huge premium for the grade though. Moderns I would stay away from, the market essentially treats their moderns as raw

In my case, I bought a 1956 MS-61 Canadian Half Dollar in the ICG slab. At least from the photos it looks quite flashy.

I always give ICG coins some extra attention. I've not found their standards to be any lower than the others, but I have found coins in ICG holders to be less expensive. That makes them a good candidate for my collection, or if suitable, a submission to another TPG. This one more reason to learn to grade coins for yourself.

ICG coins are usually as good as the other three plus they are cheap. They have at least two top-of-the-line graders yet both of them may not see every coin. I tell everyone that I see over graded, and correctly graded coins in every major service's holders. Any under graded coins are snatched up and regraded before I find them :(.
Buy the coin not the label.

I have had dozens of coins attributed and slabbed by ICG to my total satisfaction. Yesterday on ebay I saw a 1946 S inverted mint mark LWC attributed by PCGS which in my humble opinion is grossly mis-identified. I now trust ICG over PCGS if this is any indication of the direction of the service.
