I was wondering whether it be for U.S> or Canadian coins how being classified as details affects the value? I mean if the coin is in fairly good shape but it details how do you value the coin? For instance I have a Morgan dollar thats in good shape but people are saying its details. Theres no details section in catalouges.

I think it depends on the person collecting / buying the coin. For me personally, I don't care if it is considered a "details" coin. If the coin looks nice, it looks nice. There are some high-end collectors who will never want something like that, but there are others (probably more) who won't care unless it really detracts from the eye appeal. My 20-cent coin has been cleaned at some point in the past (according to the dealer). All I can tell is that the toning is not uniform on the coin (more around the edges). I don't care about toning especially, I just like the coin. It is well-worn and won't ever make a super collection - but I like it.

Edit: I didn't really answer your question: Being a details graded coin will affect the value negatively. If a coin is worth grading, it will make a difference.

Details simply means that the coin has been altered or suffered some type of chemical or environmental damage.

As for value... you won't find a value in any catalog for details type coins. I would say look at the catalog and 50% of the assigned value is a good starting point ... only going down from there...

It's varied, because a rim ding is better than cleaned and scratched. Depends on the coin, buyer must decide on their own.

The most significant factor is the rarity of the piece.

A mid grade 1890 FIFTY CENT piece with a hole would retain
more value than an 1948 ONE DOLLAR with a similar hole.

Extreme rarities are more forgiving.
(With thousands certified, the 1948 is pricy, but not rare, thus there is an abundance to select from, whereas the 1890... You take what you can get and they will not be heavily discounted).

I think it is safe to say that a Details graded coin will always be worth less than a similar condition straight grade. How much less depends on the reason for the Details designation and the rarity of the coin itself.

Personally, I am not considering any Details graded coins but, that's because the coins I'm searching for can be had straight graded at very reasonable prices that fit my budget.

If I were to attempt a Type Set, I would most likely have to settle for some Details coins (graded or not) due to my bank account.

GENERAL STATEMENT:
- The more common the coin, the greater the discount percentage from catalog.
- The nature of the problem affects the discount percentage.
-- Holing is worse than cleaning.
-- Graffiti is worse than cleaning.
- The greater the personal need for a coin, the less a person will discount it.
- The greater the personal eye appeal, the less a person will discount it.

Scarce coins may retail as much as 50% of catalog value.
Rare coins probably even more.
Common coins will drop to bullion value or in the case of copper/nickel coins to bulk value.
