Given the choice, and all else being equal (date, MM, etc.) would you rather have a well-struck coin with minor wear or a weakly struck mint state coin?

I find that I prefer the look of a well minted coin even if it shows signs of wear. Just wanted other opinions. Thanks.

Edit: I jumped the gun and posted in the wrong section - sorry.

I think usually the mint state wins, but I reckon it depends on the coin.

The question is open to too many possibilities. I'd rather have a full head Standing quarter in 58 than the same coin with a normal strike and a 62 grade. However, I'd prefer the MS if it was 64 or better.

Walking Liberty halves are notorious for weak strikes. Finding one with feathers on the right leg of the eagle on the reverse and full thumb and left leg of the dress is nearly impossible to find. I have 67s that don't have that strike. Super strong strike, all by itself, would make a Walker worth many times more than the average.

Other series, such as full steps for the Jefferson nickel, strong centers on Morgan dollars, full bell lines on the Franklin half, and many more, all have particular requirements to be dubbed as strong strikes.

The series, date, grade and mint and the percentage of examples available with strong strike would need to be considered.

I understand your question is simple, but a reliable answer needs more specific details to be of much value.

I moved this out to the main forum for the broader appeal.

I would much rather prefer a well struck AU55 with the full mint bloom that could be expected consistent with a 55,
than a fully patinated, dull gray, banged up with scratches and dents, but no wear MS60.

Market value wise, I suspect that they may be equal.

I would much rather a blast white MS66 than a fully patinated gray MS66.

I was looking at some older quarters at the local shop. There were several MS coins and some xf/au coins. The circulated coins seemed more appealing for me because they were very well struck. I am thinking of getting them due to their toning and strike.

I'm sure the hands down winner here is : A well struck coin with minor wear .

Well, probably a MS coin, because I deal with Morgan dollars most of the time. Just make sure it's an O.

I figured that the well-minted coin would win out in most cases. I'm not very well acquainted with the Morgans but from what I've seen, most of them were strongly struck so the grade will usually win with them.

Thanks for all the opinions!
