Western Kshatraps were feudatory to Kushanas. Kshatrapa or Satrap means governor. Bhumaka and his successor Nahapana of Kshaharata line ruled over the area consisting Gujarat, Maharashtra and Malwa areas. When Nahapana died, the line of Kshaharatas came to an end. Then Chastana who probably was ruling around Sind area (and under Kushans) came to rule this area. This initiated the Saka rule that lasted until around 305.AD. Family of Chastana was followed by family of Rudrasimha-II. Western Kshatrapas were in constant struggle with the Satavahanas neighbouring their land on the South. Their rule ended when Chandragupta-II of the Gupta empire Killed Rudrasimha III in the fourth century.

List of rulers
Family of Chastana:

23. Yasodaman II (317-332)
24. Rudradaman II (332-348)
25. Rudrasena III (348-380) son of (Swami)Rudradaman
26. Simhasena (380-384(5?)
27. Rudrasena IV (382-388)
28. Rudrasimha III (388-395)

First coin is of Easwara dutta.(188-191).
On the obverse, there is the bust of the king. There are corrupted Greek letters around (mostly off flan on this coin). On the reverse there is legend "rajno mahakshatrapasa Easwaraduttasa varsha pradhama", around a three arched hill with a river-like line below, six dots and crescent. "Rajno Mahakshatrapa" is the title and "varsha pradhama" means first year of rule.

Another great drnsreedhar thread!

I have about 10 to contribute as we come to them. They are a very fun series to collect, although very difficult to track down specific rulers, as few sellers attribute them!

Thank you Bob L and Finn235. You are my inspiration!

@Arkie:) Your coin is too worn out to recognise the ruler from the legend. I am posting your image modified.

Coins-Of-India-Coins-Of-Western-Kshatrapas
The portion inside the red oblong is where the name of the issuer is struck. Unfortunately, it is worn out entirely. The part visible "rajno mahakshatrapasa" will be followed by the name of the father of the issuer and by the word "putrasa" meaning "son of". The three arched hill also is visible. It is a W.K coin, but attribution seems next to impossible. Thank you.

Hai Finn235,
You can post your coins here. I would advise first to try a self attribution of them. I shall give you some literature to assist reading the legends also. That is an article from the internet. Its size is around one GB. So I shall send that to you as email attachment if possible. Thanks.

I was lucky to locate the link to the article. Please go to "how to read legends on Western Kshatrapa coins".

Damasena coin with overlay.

Coins-Of-India-Coins-Of-Western-Kshatrapas

The legend in Brahmi is read (beginning with green overlay zone) as "Rajno Mahakshatrapasa Rudrasimhasa putrasa Rajno Mahakshatrapasa Damasenasa". Meaning is Mahakshatrapa Damasena, son of Mahakshatrapa Rudrasimha.
These rulers used to strike coins with their name and title along with their father's name and title. On obverse, date in Saka era is struck in Brahmi numerals behind the bust. This pattern was followed by a number of rulers of different dynasties that ruled after them like Guptas and Maitrakas of Valabhi.

Here is a favorite of mine, and also one of my rarest:

Visvasimha as Mahakshatrapa, c. 277-282

Coins-Of-India-Coins-Of-Western-Kshatrapas

Coins-Of-India-Coins-Of-Western-Kshatrapas

Visvasimha was presumed to be the oldest son and heir apparent of his father Rudrasena II. Most coins from him are as Kshatrapa under his father; Mahakshatrapa coins are supposedly very scarce, and only a few examples have a legible date (this does not). He may have been deposed by his brother Bhartradaman.

Although a good chunk of the legend is missing, you can clearly read his titles around the top (from about 7:00)

...Rajno Mahakshatrapasa Visvasimhasa / Rajno Mahakshatrapa(sa)...
