Hey everyone,

I found this coin at an antique shop with not a lot of information. From what I can tell it's counter stamped 1636 on the obverse and VI on the reverse. I was also able to read 'HISPAN' on the obverse legend but beyond that I'm at a loss.

Any info on what this coin is/grade/value would be appreciated!

"1636" 6 Maravedies. Presumably counterstamped during Philip IV's reign, what some would call a "cob" if more worn and irregular but this one is in fairly decent shape with most of the overstamped coin visible.

Stamped over a 2 Maravedies issue of Philip III, (appears to be) Segovia mint, would date early 1600s.

Obv: PHILIPPVS III D G OMNIVM - Philip III By the Grace of God, (ruler of) All (the peoples of Spain is implied by the genitive)
A castle encircled, representing Castile.

Rev: HISPAN REGNORVM REX - King of the Kingdoms of Spain (i.e. the Crowns - Galicia, Leon, Castile, etc.)
A rampant lion encircled, representing Leon.

The stamp indicates that this coin, valued at 2 Maravedies scarcely 30 years prior, was now, per royal authority, to be valued at 6 Maravedies. This is not exactly an impressive figure, being less than 1/4 of a real d.p.

The use of this particular undertype can possibly be interpreted (somewhat freely) as a gesture at the tax-shirking Aragonese, Portuguese, and Valencians, whose refusal to defray the expenses of the Crown during the reign of Philip III, such as the Thirty Years' War and the war prosecuted against the Dutch, resulted in severe economic hardships; especially so in Castile and Leon, which bore the brunt of the tax levies. However, these counterstamped coins can be found on a wide variety of undertypes.

After Philip IV took the throne, the loss of a substantial amount of wealth at sea (Treasure Fleet) in the late 1620s, along with the royal bankruptcy, and the Franco-Spanish War of 1635 would force the king to increasingly desperate measures to raise funds, levy and collect taxes and supply the military, although the disasters which would befall his son Charles II were far worse, culminating in the disastrous War of Spanish Succession with the loss of many territories and the fall of the Habsburg dynasty in Spain.

Very. They turn up often in lots, advertised as "pirate coins", etc, although usually much more worn than this example.
