Hey guys, new here, I recently have been getting involved in coin collecting and I ran across this Lincoln Penny and I'm not sure if this is an error, or if someone filed it down, or if this was just circulated enough that it's worn down. The reverse side is practically untouched so I didn't include a photo. The front side looks super weird, the date, IGWT, and Liberty is completely worn down OR was stamped weird. I was just wondering what the community thought of this find. It doesn't appear to have been filed or I figured I would see fine little scratch marks everywhere.

Is there a way I can compare or look closer to see if it was a grease strike? Do you think it was during the process of minting the coin or do you think it was post?

Struck Through Grease like this happens during the minting process. The devices in the die get filled and when the planchet is struck, the affected areas will be weak or non-existent. Cool find!

DK to the family! It is a striking error, not PMD. Done when coin was struck. This is both a Struck Through Grease error as well as an overpolishing issue. See here: 3okk closely at the bowtie and along the back of the bust, this is polishing away of details. When using the diamond paste it gets into the incuse design details plugging them. Overpolishing wears off the face metal on the die making details shallower.

Awesome thanks guys for all the responses! This really helps. I will be taking a further look into it from a microscope as well.
Do any of you guys know if a grease strike like this will value a decent amount or is this pretty common?

Error coin prices are all over the place. Check ebay for SOLD prices for similar coins. An uncirculated coin with nice shiny fields will be worth more. Condition matters. I think anybody who really wants one of these can find one on their own because they are that common. But I do see that they are for sale....

to CCF Nice to start out with an actual mint error - yeah I don't see many where the first 2 digits of the date are Greased and then in addition to that most of the IGWT is missing as well. I think you could get a few bucks for it on ebay.

It has Struck Through Grease. Nice to see someone actually start out with a genuine Mint error. Nice find! :)

Pretty cool, and a San Fran one to boot. I'd keep it in a 2X2.

I'd keep it because it is a little more substantial than what is usually found.
It's not spectacular but, worth keeping IMO.
