This was the third coin I've ever bought ever since I started collecting a little over a year ago. I bought it for a shocking price of $2.50....(guess me and the clerks lack of intelligence led to that mistake). Somehow over the dozens of times I looked it over I never noticed these lines on the shield, I was hoping someone could tell me what they are.   Edited by Alex12780

I don' think that the shield it's right, mine doesn't look like that with the lines going out of the shield

Can you post a picture of the obverse? It looks like a WB-102 but need the obverse to be sure. In Bill Bugert's latest book, "A Register of Liberty Seated half dollars, Vol. 5", it looks to be a WB-`102, WB-17. Here is an image from the book.  Edited by Heymikep

Thank you for the replies so far. Here are some pictures of the obverse, if you need better pictures I can try to take better ones in the morning. -it's hard to get a picture of it but I can see the repunched 8,4,3 mentioned in the book above   Edited by Alex12780

It looks like a match. The date placement and die cracks on obverse and reverse line up with his attribution.

For some reason the vertical lines in the shield on these coins were hand cut into the dies and if the graver slipped the lines could extend up into the horizontal lines. While extended lines aren't that unusual, these are much more extreme than usually seen. Much have been an apprentice engraver.

Alex12780, If you were to put an attribute to it then I would say WB-102. I don't believe, nor have I ever seen, a TPG attribute with the newer WB-** designations. The newest book has identified 37 die marriages for the 1843 Seated half dollar. |
