Never seen this before - looks like a ghost D mint mark inside the main D. Is this a re-punch or something else?

Very odd nickel there...

Anyhow, the mintmark is interesting, buit cannot say for sure what it is without examination.

I found one of those too! I was also wondering about it. It is the same year and mint mark. I just thought the strike took some of the copper off with it. Of course I just started searching pennies and I don't know a thing about it!

CONECA lists a 1987-D with a RPM rotated CW as RPM-012, but no photo. Only CW mentioned

I'm sorry for the stupid question, but, what is "RPM", and "CW"?

Thank you biokemist! I feel like such an idiot having to ask stupid newby questions! But then, I am a stupid newby--trying to get a little wiser though!

I know RPM-012 for the date, and this is not that one. If it's an RPM, it could be a new one.

I don't see anything unusual other than the corrosion that is in the shape of the mintmark. What am I missing?

Thanks,
Bill

The lower portion of the outside of the D is affected by split plating exposing the zinc. However, whats inside of the D is much more interesting and it appears to be a serif but it could also be a "ghost image" from irregular toning. An in-hand examination under a microscope would probably reveal what exactly it is or is not, but I am not sure either way
