1,3,4 seem to have nicer original surfaces.

If I could only have one, it would be #3.

#3 is my favorite also, but my coin piggy bank is down to...just some coins.

This will be fun. Ok here goes Chesterb's comments:
Coin 1: coin is MS-60 not AU. It's not too terribly baggy so it must have some luster impairment issues in addition to being dull. I don't know if this coin has true original surfaces but I'd have to see it in hand to confirm. The reverse is mottled and I don't like the color on the obverse. It's very close though and it wouldn't bother me.
Coin 2: Hairlines, too bright. I definitely would not call these original surfaces myself.
Coin 3: The surfaces are dark but pretty much blemish free. It looks like some hidden luster remains around the stars and Liberty. I don't see anything that would indicate these surfaces are not original. I like this coin.
Coin 4: This coin is similar to coin 3 but a tad more baggy and crusty. I think these surfaces are original and I like this coin too (the reverse more so than the obverse.)
Coin 5: Pretty coin but it looks like it had an old cleaning and is now retoning.

In retrospect I may have been a bit harsh on coin 1. I'd snatch it up at its current bid if it's truly unc.

Can't argue that #3 is probably the best of the lot, but it still looks lifeless to me.

I was mildly interested in coin #4 the 1845 with the green bean. I watched it but it sold for too much money or more than I would have paid for it. Coin 3 the 1846-o was original but just didn't do it for me. Coin 5 was pretty but looked like it had been worked on. Coin 2, the 1860 had 38 users following it which is off the charts and the only reason it landed on my radar. But like you guys pointed out, it obviously had been cleaned. Really on that one. Coin 1, the 1871 was original but the eye appeal just wasn't there for me. It's really depressing that a show with 40+ Seated dollars only has 1 coin that I would even consider bidding on. It's almost like collectors have just given up on finding original Seated dollars with natural toning and settle for whatever they can get their hands on.

Coin #2 had the most followers IMO because it is a tough coin in PCGS AU58. With a PCGS pop. of 13 coins and a CAC pop. of 2 coins. PCGS shows no auction sales for a PCGS AU58 in their archives which go back 20 yrs. Finding an original and attractive 1860 SLD in AU53-AU58 will be very very difficult. Sometimes you have to compromise. Do not forget the Everymans Registry sets where 58's are prized.

Well that makes sense, Everest. But 38 followers for a cleaned coin? The logic is beyond me.

I think part of the problem Mike is the grade you are putting together. Most of these AU coins were cleaned as they were passed as unc. or sliders. So first off AU's are scarce to begin with and then I would guess probably 95% were cleaned. I'm sure someone has probably written about the % and has a better estimate but it's probably close. So if you want true original surfaces then you're looking for 5% of a small number of coins. If you lowered you collection to include EF then you would have more examples to pick from but then you take away from the hunt and true scarcity of the original AU set your trying to assemble. I suspect you'll be putting together this set and upgrading it for many years to come.

Yeah I agree Chester. It's just disappointing when show after show, you end up narrowing it down to 1 or 2 coins that are acceptable candidates. The original coins seem to be hoarded by specialists and collectors. Anyways thanks for playing everyone! It was great to hear your opinions!
