I'd take a stab and say MS62, cleaned obverse, PL reverse.

(Please note I stink at grading silver and gold coins)

Clearly a details (cleaned) coin, possibly a mishandled proof.

Cleaned at some point, but still a lovely coin. I'm in the 62-63 camp on this one.

Does look like a proof. Reverse looks 63-ish, with good cameo contrast. Obverse is badly hairlined from an abrasive cleaning. Unfortunately this piece has probably lost 30-40% of its value due to the cleaning.

Nice details, MS-62. Would be interesting and expensive conversation piece if a collector resorted to cleaning a proof coin due to PVC damage?

Looks like some of you nailed it. 950 proof quarters were struck in 1872 and coin facts estimates that 650 survived. Most are in choice and gem proof grades, so many graded better than this one. PCGS has graded just 7 at PR60 and this is the only auction record of a coin in this grade I can find. I think that it is a mishandled proof. Loved the obverse toning. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on grade.

Thanks. The coin is certainly hairlined in the right obverse field and I think it was wiped. It is fairly faint and is a toss up as to whether it should be detailed - I would agree either way. I think that the coin's value derives mostly from the striking deep blue obverse toning and its survivorship numbers at 650 coins. That number doesn't make it rare, but scarce. The reverse was a surprise because it has a nice orange-peach even brilliant toning throughout. Love the coin more than when I first saw it in the catalog.
