@dorado, PMD seems like the most likely explanation to me, but I wonder if you could provide a close-up pic of just that area of the obv.

A lot of cents during this time period had it right up on the rim there and yours just seems to have taken a hit in that area as well. So it is a normal strike for this year - check this one out on ebay.

Ok yep, thanks for posting the better pic. I think that @John1 and @CCL got it right--just damage to the inscription from a well-placed hit.

Extreme die wear on BOTH sides! Worn dies have metal flowing outwards, stretches the letters and moves them closvto edge of dies. This one shows on both dies with letters close to edge of die. Bet you find some microscopic spider cracks somewhere. Just shows how far Mint went to get money's worth outta those dies! It is unusual to find that both sides are worn in that way, usually just hammer dies wear like that.

Back then, the U.S. Mint did anything to get their money's worth out of one die. The Mint was being a huge cheapskate as this was past beyond it's retirement. I'm surprised that there is no major Die breaks going on as it's in a very late die state (VLDS). Now they don't let this happen as much.
