I am new to collecting but have had bunch of SBA dollars (~75) in a bag for a decade or so. My wife bought these when they were brought in by customers when she worked in fast food management. Most are 1979 and the bulk are just in average shape. Would you hold on to them or cash them in and buy some decent coins or hold them? There are a couple of 79s and 80s that may grade ok but the rest are, as mentioned above, average or below.

Thanks for your advice.

Check the 1979-Ps for the Wide Rim(near date) variety, that is the only non-proof issue with a premium

You could also set aside any S mint SBAs as well(100+ million 1979 and 20+ million 1980 S minted SBAs were issued for circulation) and just cash in the rest.

Those, I fear, are what you would call 'spenders.'

There are a couple of "varieties" that you could check for with the '79's.
Narrow rim and Wide rim or "far date" and "near date". You could look in a RedBook to see what those look like exactly.
The '81 P,D, or S were only issued in Mints sets......but you didn't mention those.
But, even in Uncirculated condition, they don't command much money.....
The book only lists two conditions..... PF65 (proof) and MS63 condition (choice uncirculated) with that being the "lowest" listed price value and that says $3.00..(which typically the RedBook badly inflates or is just outdated and their "coin values" listed are to be ignored anyway).......you said yours were average or below so........
You could still just save the best "examples" you have and put em' away for a couple of decades.....ya never know if they'll become popular.
1979 "D" is the highest mintage number at 288,015,744........the 1980 "P", "D", or "S" still has the same value as the 1979 does even though the mintage numbers are 41 million or less........just not a real valuable coin.....espicially in those conditions IMHO....

Avg circulated SBA: Spend them. As others said, take out the wide rim 79P and if you have proofs or and 81 coins. And maybe keep the best example of each date/mint mark. Spend the rest and enjoy the comments you receive.

definitely cash them in, they are not worth your time and are always readily available at any bank.
