We have asked who is in to roll hunting and we have asked what are you roll hunting...now the burning question is.....Why Do You Roll Hunt?
I can name several reasons for myself. It's the thrill of the hunt (and I'm not talking about looking for that coin you dropped and it rolled under the bookshelf), and the anticipation of making that next great find (and I'm not talking about that coin you dropped that rolled under the bookshelf).
The MAIN reason I search rolls is it is how I help finance my coin habit. It allows me to purchase the coins I really enjoy. Yes, I do keep some of my finds but when I find silver, it is extra cash to put toward a purchase. I'm not interested in having a hoard of 40% Kennedys lying in rolls at the bottom of a safe. They are just a means to an end.
So, why do you roll hunt?

Like you, of-grampa, I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. The next may might contain nothing but it might also contain something amazing. Those good finds are a nice (and cheap) way to add to my collection.

Why do I roll hunt? Collecting silver is one aspect of preparing for the hard times ahead. Roll hunting has been an enjoyable and fruitful way to do that. The hunt is exciting, and a good find is thrilling. In truth, it was just as fun finding my first 1970 and 1976 silver as a roll of 40's. It is also a good way to get a feel for the people and communities of this area.

I roll hunt for the thrill of the hunt, to collect silver and to finance other coin purchases.
I've been searching nickels lately and have sold errors and partial sets to purchase higher quaility nickels. I'm working on a full step set for myself, so it helps to hedge the cost.

It's the "thrill of the hunt" for me too, but also I like the idea of getting semi-valuable coins for FACE VALUE !... The price of silver will not affect my "silver huntin'" either......I want em' regardless of that !....of course it's debilitating when the competition is so high and the "silver fever" is so high....

I'm searching rolls right now to fill the last holes in a couple albums; looking for things like a 1996D cent, 1998D nickel, that sort of thing. Once I get those finished I'll likely just grab an occasional roll from the bank once in a while.

It's the "thrill'! I've been enjoying fishing since I was a kid. Roll-hunting has the same affect as fishing. I do drive around looking for customer rolls. So I will sell some of my 40% to pay the gas. Now the gas just get more and more expensive.

I just started back after a many year break (wish I never stopped). I love finding unusual things and of course the rare silver. My latest finds were in $120 of halves. I found 2 proof S mint coins that never should have been in circulation, a 67 a 68, a couple non circulation mint set only coins and the funny thing was that at least $60 of the half were 1976. I also just got this in the same set https://goccf.com/t/29512. anyone every seen one of these?

Cool find! It's strange how on that picture it looks like a smaller coin simply put on top of the half. But by the looks of the obverse, its obviously stamped in. Weird. But cool. Reminds me of the bad gold plating (dye?) halves that have 1960 - 1980 counter stamped on them. Who in the heck did those? I got three of them now. I guess that qualifies as a collection, huh? lol I want them all!

I like to roll hunt because you dont know what the next roll holds. I get really excited on simple finds. This is something that me and my wife do together and we really enjoy doing so to. We sometimes play silly games like who finds the most keepers and stuff like that. We gamble for chores and she wins alot LOL. Granted I might never find a really rare coin roll hunting but just finding a silver one or a buff is enough to make my week. I also get a kick out of what pops up in rolls too. I found a battery in a roll before.

I like to roll hunt for the thrill of the hunt.....like many of you, I like to find silver to use towards other coin purchases, but the main thing I search for is ciruculated proofs and other coins that were never meant to circulate, but found their way there. Right now, I'm searching for circualted examples of any 1981 Anthony dollars, a 1996 W dime and a 1970 or 1987 half dollar. Oh yeah, almost for got the 1973 Ikes, but highly doubt I have a shot at finding one of those.

Mostly I'm looking for new undiscovered varieties but I'm also interested in insights into how the coins are distributed and wear.
The idea of finding valuable coins appeals a great deal to me and there are more in circulation than ever. There are so many rare quarters that you can pretty much expect one in twenty or thirty rolls. But valuable coins are rare and the odds of finding one just aren't that high.
It's a pleasant diversion as well.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I like finding wheats and putting together sets. Also, finding those Wide AM is pretty cool. That 1999 is a beast to find :) -SFWUSC

It is the thrill of the hunt for me. Looking through tens of thousands of pennies, for wheat cents needed to fill holes in albums! Still looking for the 1931-S.

The "Thrill of the hunt" seems to be the general consensus and I would have to agree. It is not often I have exceptional finds, but I'm sure almost everyone here has a memory that they will never forget about that "lucky day at the bank". Just knowing that you never know what will be in the next roll is very exciting and it seems to happen when you least expect it.
