Does the scarcity of the Wide AM apply to the "S" in 1998?

All 1959-1992 coins have the wide A M. 1993 P-D-S all Close AM. 1994 business strike (plain & D)coins till now are Close AM coins. Proof coins should all be wide A M except for the 1993-S. The rarer coins are the 1998, 1999, 2000 plain Wide AM's. 1992 plain & D Close AM are very rare. So I would say a 1998-S (proof coin) would be normal to have the wide A M on them.

And isn't there a 1998-S Close AM proof that's rather scarce? I keep looking for one of those.

1998-s and 1999-s are known to have the Close AM, which is normal for the business strike coins, but wrong for the proofs. What you're showing is the normal Wide AM for the proofs.

I purchased the discovery set of 1998-s Close AM proof from the original discoverer at a coin show in Oklahoma City in 1999. Purchase price was $1200. Since then fewer than two dozen 1998-s Close AM sets have been found. Hundreds of the 1999-s Close AM cents are known.

Agree I think a few 1999S Close AM error PROOFS have been found.
I don't know if ANY 1998S or 2000S Close AM PROOFS have been discovered yet?

*I'm only using these three dates, since they are the only years where the business circulated cents have the Wide AM error that's been found so far!

I don't know!

Based on pure speculation- here is my logic on this.

There is one out there!-
Since the three KNOWN years of Wide AM business circulated errors already found are the 98,99,and 2000 cent, AND since the 1998S and 1999S Proof Close AM errors have already been found-
THEN, that leaves just one possible conclusion- there must be a 2000S Proof Close AM Error yet to be discovered!

The following DISCLAIMER is added:
***GOOD LUCK TRYING TO FIND IT THOUGH!!* (LOL)

Bad logic. Just because both types were found on the 98 and 99 has nothing to do with whether or not 2000 will be found both ways.

Conder101:

My above post was just keeping it light!

Seriously, I'll agree that just because the Mint messed up 98 & 99 doesn't mean that they did it in 2000.

HOWEVER: IT ALSO DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY DID NOT !

If the US Mint messed up the business strikes and proof strikes for these 3 years- why could there not be a 2000 Proof Set out there with a Close AM?

I'm saying the probability is there- if I'm wrong- tell me why?

What other Wide AM errors have been found besides 98,99 and 2000? & conversely- 98 and 99 Proof Errors have been found so why couldn't the Mint botch up 2000 also?

This may sound like double talk :-) but...I check everything for everything:-)

Some things are logical. Some things totally defy logic. Rather than ruling things in or out by past Mint fiascos, I try to look at each coin for whatever can be found.

Have Fun,Bill
