Look what I gt in my change at Woolies this morning ... I hadn't heard anything about them so it was quite a surprise!
When I got home I googled it and found that they are a series being released over three weeks commencing today.

I will be on the lookout for an example, but I doubt if I will find one.
Is it an issue for collectors only, and not intended for general circulation?

According to this article
http://www.news.com.au/finance/busi...d7aec4f1e09b
the coloured $2 coins have a mintage of 2 million each. So, in my opinion, they are circulation coins.
The $1 coins and the 1c seem to be NCLT however

General Circulation ... all you have to do his purchase something in Woolies using cash and then check your change.
I see also that they are selling a 'Possum Magic Coin Collection' which cost $15. It has all three $2 coin designs, four different $1 designs plus a unique 1 cent coin.

Saw the set here and went to Woolies, and bought a set within 10 minutes, just before they closed at 10AM this evening.

Yes, much quicker than buying from RAM, plus no $10 postage necessary!

The one cent coin is limited to the packaged sets only, (as are the one dollar coins).
What makes the one cent coin more intriguing is the fact that they are so rarely issued in this denomination, even as an NCLT issue.

I just bought two sets of these coins. I opened one set and found the $1 coins in particular were very tarnished around the edges.

I asked twice at checkouts and they had none of the circulating coins.

Apparently the staff have been told that these coins are to be be given out at random, so it's just the luck of the draw!

They looked at what was in their till and said they had run out.
For it to be truly "random" the staff would have to be restricted from seeing what they are handing out, so they could have no ability to meddle (accidentally or deliberately) with the random chance.
I doubt anyone would have a problem with one customer asking at the checkout and being given a coin or two.

I am collecting these and have my 7yo buy something in front of me and he asks very politely for a possum coin in his change. He was given 2 each time. Then when I follow up with the rest of our groceries I was also given 2. We have school issue folders we are trying to fill (spaces for the 3 $2 coins only)

As an experienced coin collector, I thought that the Possum Magic coins were of almost no numismatic significance at all.

Then I had a rethink.
This small series of coins is not aimed the sort of collector that I happen to be.
This series is aimed at kids.
I started out into collecting when I was a kid.

Both the hobby of coin collecting and numismatics need new members.
For this reason, the Royal Australian Mint should be congratulated for producing the Possum Magic series of coins.

And that is why I have a set of them also.
