FOUND: 1952-S Ben Franklin half-dollar. It's not in exceptional condition, just the usual circulated condition for this era.

Are these desirable to collectors for any reason or should I not keep it separated from the generic silver melt pile?

I'm brand new to the hunting/collecting community, so my knowledge base is practically nil.

Thanks in advance!
Rest in Peace

It's probably worth more than melt value as there are lots of Franklin collectors who are perfectly happy with a fairly circulated example. The only way you could sell it for over melt value would be directly to the collector, as any fees for selling it or postage costs would probably eat up most of the value over melt.

There are people out there, like myself, who still put a value onto most San Fransisco coins b/c, normally, relative to the other mints, the SF mint made fewer coins. It was always special to find an S-mint coin since they ere harder to find in circulation.

A lot of people nowadays subscribe to the idea that everything is junk silver unless its a key date. This concept has unintentionally grown since the internet has made slabbed coins much more popular than they used to be, thus shifting the focus.

It is impossible to tell, but maybe sometime in the future collectors will return to valuing each coin individually. It seems anything with intrinsic value that is more difficult to locate can retain value through a paradigm shift such as this.

I know there are still people out there who continue to see non P or D mint coins as special and would find it very difficult to think of most S-mint coins as being just melt value unless beat up or in very poor condition.

Premium would be very modest given the rim issues.

I'm in agreement with Earle42. Any pre '56 coin from the San Francisco mint is a keeper.
