The challenge is to post your oldest coin showing an aircraft.

Rules:

1) Valid aircraft are balloons (hot air and light gas -- hydrogen, helium, neon, methane, ammonia, nitrogen, etc.), blimps, airships, dirigibles, helicopters, autogyros, powered and unpowered airplanes, rockets, missiles, drones, etc. Not allowed are birds, insets, bats, airborne leaves and seeds, etc. Bullets, shells, artillery, arrows, spears, darts, parachutes, or other objects flung or hurled into the air do not count.

2) Normal circulating coins, NCLT coins, and notgeld, with a written or unwritten date are allowed. Not allowed are tokens, fantasy coins, medals, banknotes, stamps, private/non-government rounds, patterns, test strikes, checks, pre-coinage items (like knives, shovels, cowrie shells), etc.

3) The date range that the coin was likely produced is used for scoring, whether or not it is written on the coin. Some reputable (and reasonably modern) reference book should be used to establish the date range. Dates are converted to the usual AD/BC scale.

4) One point is awarded for the last year of the date range when the coin could have been produced. BC coins get a negative number of points. The coin with the fewest points (possibly the most negative) wins. Example -- coin was produced from 40BC to 13BC, gets -13 points.

5) The year when the coin was actually minted will override any dates written on the coin. (The actual production years for dated restrikes will count, not the date on the coin.)

6) Coins dated after 2019 will get 2019 points (unless it is known that the coin was produced prior to 2019).

7) Posts with a coin not showing an aircraft and posts with no valid coin will receive 2020 points. These will count in the leaderboard. The first one of these posts might win, if nobody posts any valid coins for this round.

8) There is no bonus for an exact match.

9) In case of a points tie, the earliest post wins

10) If one poster submits multiple entries, only the one with the fewest points will appear in the leaderboard.

11) Cutoff for entries 20:30 forum time, 2019/11/05.

It looks like Dorado takes the early lead with 2020 points.

Are there any ancient coins with Daedalus? That would count as an aircraft, I think.

@pep, when you say no satellites, I assume you are not talking about man-made spacecraft. In other words, would a coin with the moon lander on it count or not? Thx for the clarification.

I guess we can allow satellites, as long as they're manned, or capable of being manned. Also allowed are rockets and missiles, but not small ones used for fireworks, etc. I would also exclude small rockets like RPGs, bazooka shells, etc.

I guess we should exclude kites, toy balloons, and the like, along with science fiction stuff.

I guess the ideal arircaft for this challenge is one that is manned.
