Well, then, time for the games to begin again. We will be playing the matching game today, and bigger is better.
For your viewing pleasure today is a very large medal that looks to be made of copper. It is 50 mm in diameter and weighs just over 99 grams! Pictured is the Metropolitan Life Insurance Building in Ottawa, Ontario. The building is on the corner of Wellington and Bay but is now occupied by government offices. I have a great interest in exonumia from my home city.
The medal is (ca) 1950, and after showing it at the coin club meeting Monday, one of my friends had an interesting story. His grandfather was a cashier there in the 1950s, and it was quite common for people to come in every month and pay their insurance premiums in cash. How times have changed.
Here is the point scheme:
1. Medals and coins are eligible.
2. Size: 1 point for every 10 mm in size starting at 10 mm. So 10 mm-19 mm is 1, 20-29 is 2. Maximum 10. If the item is not round, choose the greatest length.
3. Metal: 1 point for copper
4. Design elements:
a. 1 point each for the any of these words Metropolitan, Life, Insurance, Company, Head, Office, Ottawa, Canada (note: there are a number of places in the US called Ottawa)
b. 1 point each for building and trees
c. 1 point for a coat of arms
d. 1 point each for animals, crown, flag, crown, branches or leaves (separate from the tree if you have one), musical instrument, flower (even representative ones like the fleur de lis on the coat of arms) and a latin
motto.
5. Bonus: 2 points if the subject of the medal can be located to the city you are living in.
