JBuck I am not sure about that cent, it looks cleaned, as there is some flattening on the leaves. Is it possible to get a better shot as the colour looks a bit weird.
The pains of processing; the original photo is much darker. I took it with my phone after I bought it back in 2011 (still in the 2x2 which adds to the weird appearance). It is in my 7070, so it would be a while before I could take a better photo.

Sorry for the delay. I just checked back after finally being able to come up with a decent challenge. Oh well.

I hope you write it down somewhere to use if you ever happen to win again.

The last challenge I hosted had been written down a long time.

Some incredible bronzes in this one!

My oldest AU bronze that is actually bronze and not billon

Roman Empire, Crispus as Caesar, PRINCIPIA IVVENTVTIS
Struck about 317-318 AD
Yet-Another-Forum-Game---Numismatic-Go-Fish!

If that doesn't count, my oldest RD bronze

Japan, 1 rin 1884
Yet-Another-Forum-Game---Numismatic-Go-Fish!

And in case it ever comes up in trivia (I believe I started a thread a couple years ago and we never came to a final conclusion) I believe that the oldest mint state coin with original surfaces is this sestertius of Titus that sold for $150,000 a few years back:

It was apparently stashed almost 2,000 years ago in a remarkably inert and anoxic environment, which prevented the patination process.

Keith12 - Sorry did not realise it was an American coin, I really only know British and Europe along with Pacific coins.

Finn I am in 2 minds with your Roman coin - it is very nice but to me its only VF - EF it has no lustre.

BUT - I will offer you half points for it, which will give you 851 points and throw you straight into the lead. Is that Okay. Also a coin that old is just incredible.

You are going to win unless someone shows a full lustre copper coin dated 1597 or earlier!

J Buck - accepted.

Standings

Finn235 - 851 points
J Buck - 282 points
bd251 - accepted - 264 points
Keith12 - stunning and accepted - 494 points
Pepactonius - another gorgeous piece, I know Brown lustre is prized and you will receive double points too - 400 points.

I am giving everyone except Finn double points as these coins are all just real eye candy and they are great!

Keep them coming.

That is possibly the most beautiful coin I've ever seen!

Here are some more just for fun. I like the Grand Duchy of Finland 1 penni coins because it's not too difficult to find AU examples with decent luster on a budget.

10 penniä 1917 (I guess I should have actually posted this one first for double points. Lol)

Bd251 - I have given you Double points - Your coin is only 131 years old so it gets 262 points.
Had you entered the 1917 you would have only got 206 points.

Spence - Agree, a nice and cute piece - 192 points for you.
Still more than what I would have got had I entered (158 points). No easy passes for me, you have to walk the walk in fun coin challenges!

Thanks!

I want to avoid sticking to contests that rely on superlatives (since oftentimes it ends up being an ancient that wins) so here's a good old fashioned "closest match" contest

Isle of Jersey, 1/13th of a shilling (Penny) 1870
Yet-Another-Forum-Game---Numismatic-Go-Fish!

These were an unusual transitional coinage used to facilitate the transition of the island of Jersey from the French Livre to the Pound Sterling - it was apparently decided that it would be better to have a 1:n correlation with the old currency rather than a 1:1 correlation to the penny and its fractions. These were phased out in favor of the 1/12th shilling coins in 1877.

Scoring (cumulative):

Coin from the UK or any of its colonies or dependencies: 1 point
Any of the Channel Islands: 1 point
Jersey: 1 point

Features Queen Victoria: 2 points
Features a Coat of Arms: 1 point
Features a lion: 1 point each

Material: Bronze or brass: 1 point
Size: "Penny size" (25-35mm): 1 point
Size: 29.35mm: 1 point

Unusual denomination (does not fit readily into decimal or base-12 monetary system): 1 point
Denomination expressed as a fraction of a larger unit: 1 point
1/13th denomination: 2 points

Date: Any 19th century: 1 point
Date: 1870: 1 point

Good luck all!

- UK
- Coat of arms
- lions (x7)
- Denomination is a fraction

So 10 points?
