I am not very familiar with the Large cent. I am new to an old hobby of mine. The coin is a Large cent with a stamp on her face. The stamp resembles parts of her hair or a combination of numbers. Maybe it is something else. I have looked at it through my microscope and still can't determine where or what it is from. Has anyone seen anything like this? I am puzzled and excited at the same time. Could this be a stamp blunder from the Mint? Or perhaps an after Mint addition? Thanks for any advice.

@mint1, first welcome to CCF. Second, that is an interesting counterstamp on your 1853 Large Cent. It would have been placed on this coin after it was minted and unless is something special would likely only detract from the coin's value. Maybe a cursive letter D? In looking at your coin a little more closely, is there a second, spherical punch that was applied just past the Y in LIBERTY? There seem to be two flat spots on the rev.

In any case, we have one or two folks here who know a ton about these things and should be along at some point to help. At worst, it is a maveric counterstamp and an interesting piece of Americana.

Thanks for the welcome. After looking below the Y in Liberty. I do see another stamp. Under 40x magnification I still can't identify what is in the second stamp. Thank's for your thoughts. I am still puzzled. Perhaps it was used as a means of identification during the civil war.

Along with the counterstamp on Liberty's cheek, whih=ch I also think is a backwards '&', it looks like someone tried to tool around her profile, and out to the star at the 2:00 position. For what reason, I have no idea.

This would be a nice coin, but the counterstamp, IMO, detracts from the value. The counterstamp is doubtfully of any significance, and unfortunately just defaces the coin.
