I saw a 1909 penny VDB but it doesn't have anything written on the bottom of the date. Is it worth it?

In my opinion, no. If it had the "VDB" initials on it, it be worth getting because they didn't produce that many with the initials on it do to the person not liking the initials on the coin. So the mint changed it this time with no initials. The one with the initials is worth more.

Yes, it has the VBD initials on the back of it but nothing written under 1909 on the front.

Oh. Then I think it's still not worth buying. Buy one with the VDB under the bust if you can.

@starnote, it sounds like you have a cent minted in Philadelphia. These have some value (but less less than their brothers from San Francisco). Maybe post some pics so we can confirm. Thx.

In FINE condition, the order in value, lowest to highest, is: 1909: $5 1909 VDB: $$15 1909 S: $150 1909 VDBS: $1,300

In 1909, the two US mints, Philadelphia and San Fransisco bother produced THREE individual coins. In the early months the last year of the Indian Head cent was in production. Then mid way the new Lincoln Cent was introduced with the designer's initials V.D.B.(Victor D. Bennet) on the lower reverse. Complaints( most stringently by the losers of new design to Brenner) were filed about the showy initials and within a short few months new dies were produced for bothq mints with the initials removed. The short production runs of the 1909 VDB & 1909S-VDB created a rarity situation, mainly for the meager production facilities of the San Fransisco mint. This rarity also affected the 1909S Indian Head cent. Next time a story about the Paperboys and the newly issued VDB cent!
