Looks like a splotch down by the date and maybe something on the book? If you can provide a couple of sharper images and a close up of the area(s) in question we would be happy you out. People with idle time have a knack for damaging stuff....coins included. They use hammers, vices, railroad tracks....you name it. Keep looking for stuff though.
