Hey guys, looking for some input from the Large Cent Vets. Do I have the die pairing I think I am looking at? I know little of this series, but pulled this coin out and noticed some strong doubling beneath the corrosion and then looking up varieties for the 1882-H. What do you guys think?

From the photos, I don't see any doubling, but it's tough to see on a computer screen. All I see is an Obverse 1, single serif '82. Do you see doubling in Regina? Gratia? Sorry I can't help

Hi Okiecoiner, Yes, I see what appears to be heavy doubling beneath the corrlsion on the Canada/Regina. So this is an obverse 1? I'm a complete newb on this series. The die crack going through the 'C' in Victoria, is that an obverse 1 marker as well? Another picture to show you some of the features. Lots going on with this coin

Sadly, there isn't any doubling in that cent. That added pic does help us come to that conclusion ..

thrustie, I don't believe yours is the heavy punch doubling. This is what you should be looking for in the 1882's for heavy punch doubling. This one is not high grade but it should give you an idea what to look for. Have fun! MG

Lol thanks viper. Now its driving me crazy. I still see a faint complete double lettering on the same sides for regina and canada as where the doubling is on that DDO. Almosy like the corrosion has covered them partly amd of course my camera just can't get a good photo. Ready to simoniz this thing just to prove to myself it isn't haha

To begin with, the "heavy punch doubling" ( DDO)is on an 1882 Obv 2/1a Obverse. Your coin is just an Obv 1. There are many repunched letters in the legend on any number of 1881 & 1882 dies until they started using the newly manufactured Obverse 2 dies. All of the 1881 & 2 Obverse were manually repunched or hub-doubled 1876 dies that originally were all Obverse 1's with a single serif. I would try a lengthy soak in olive oil for your coin to soften up the corrosion ... maybe weeks.
