Can anyone please tell from these pictures if this 1769 8 reales is genuine or fake and why? It weighs 26.7 grams. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for any help. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Anyone? Any clues on if it's real or not? There is one thing that seems odd to me, but before I mention that, I really would appreciate others' thoughts. It seems real, has the right weight and diameter, edge looks good to me but I'm certainly no expert. Please, anyone have opinions on this coin's legitimacy?

Clarifying that I am not an expert either, nevertheless comparing your coin with a certified one I see some suspicious things: Shape of letters like N in HISPAN and numbers in 1769 On the reverse shield, details in the lions, grenade, the cross of the crown I don't known....Have a look and compare https://coins.ha.com/itm/mexico/mex...1442-63366.s

Ok, Thank you for reply. I also noticed that the N s on the HISPAN and the IND do not have a full "serif" on the bottom of them. Is that what you mean? And what exactly is different in the lion details? I'm not sure. And what is the "grenade"? Sorry, but like I admitted, I'm no expert on these.
I bought this coin and have a few days to return it if I want, and things like this make me lean that way. Only paid $80 US, but not knowing whether genuine is no bargain.
Please let me know a little more of these things you mentioned, they help a lot. And when you said the N s are a bit different, is that what you meant about the bottoms aren't quite right? I call that bottom line of the N s the serif, not sure if that's the correct term for them. Thank you so much.

I'm suspicious of it. Probably the most copied coin in history. This is an excellent site to get opinions, stay tuned.

What I mean about shape of letters and numbers is that they are thicker and with rounded angles, something that is often seen in fakes. Imperfections could be the result of a transfer die. The imperfections are more noticeable in the finer details of the shield, such as the tongues of the lions, or the small pomegranate (sorry, the fruit below, it represents the recovery of this territory for the crown of Castile and Leon). Is that above the right leg of the letter M of the assayers a bubble? That should not be there. The weight is not bad, but only a measure of the specific gravity would indicate if it is the correct alloy. Finally, $ 80 is too low a price for a Pillar , have you bought it in China? I think an authentic one does not worth less than $ 200 these days.

Thank you Cara. Based on everything you said and showed me, seems fake to me. I sent it back to get my money back. The seller was in the US on the biggest site (don't know if I can use their name) and when they found out I'm sending it back said that Heritage looked at it and said it was genuine. lol. Anyway, Thank you..you helped me not lose $80!

I wouldn't rush to conclusions, I don't see anything that jumps out at me about the coin being fake, and I believe that different number punches were in use, so such differences wouldn't amount to much. Wait for more expert opinions before sending it back.

Well, I already did send it back. And the seller wasn't too happy about it either. Things like what Cara said about the small bump above the M, all the other graded and authenticated 1769s I looked at on line had 6s in the date that had round ball ends is the best way I can describe it, things like that all were red flags to me. And the seller had another one that went all the way to auction's end on the bay that sold for only $40. It looked even more suspect as very blurred details. I'm ok with losing $3 shipping back rather than out $80 and not knowing for sure. And is the "grenade" the part below the cross on the crown? that cross looked different on the one I had too. A lot "thicker" than authenticated ones.
