I was offerred some 90% silver locally. The lot includes Washington quarters, Walkers, Franklins, and Kennedy halves including 11 proofs (1992-S through 2002-S). Everything is pre-1965 except the 11 proofs. I noticed that the 11 proofs ($5.50) are included the total face value for the 90% silver calculation. How are 90% proof S-mint Kennedy halves distinguished from clad proofs? It could be a jackpot or a bust!
Rest in Peace

The edge reeding is silver. Clad Proofs have cladding like normal

You mentioned Kennedy's, remember only 64 is 90%, 65-70 is only 40%. Otherwise if price is slightly above melt jump on it!

As far as I know, the '92-'02 Kennedy S-mint proofs are CuNi clad and not silver. The date helps in distinguishing them above looking at the edge.

Wow, I don't know what I was thinking. I've had at least one of those silver proof sets. Brain fart!

Carry on...

NGC shows both 90% silver Kennedy proofs and CuNi Kennedy proofs were minted in San Francisco for the dates I listed. I actually thought the same thing until I looked it up. I almost told the seller that they are definitely CuNi. But, all the coins are in 2 x 2's. So, I would have to ask if they can be removed to look at the edges. Maybe a magnet would be helpful too.

Magnet won't help, it doesn't react to coppernickel or silver, but the tissue test would work with them in the 2X2's. Single layer of tissue paper over them. If they look WHITE through the tissue they are silver, if the are dull or gray they are clad.
