Picked this up for about $125 shipped. Have always wanted one, and think it was a pretty good deal. Thoughts on grade.

An absolute steal for that price. Wonderful undisturbed original patination. Slight circulation cameo, too.

I would not be surprised with a righteous F-15.

Don't know how to grade these but it seems like a great coin with great detail. Congrats!

Great pick-up that looks to be in about the same condition as my VF-20, but at a considerably lower price. Yours has a little more detail remaining in the face, which is nice.

Nice colonial

Massachusetts wasn't a colony in 1788. On July 4, 1776, the 13 colonies declared their independence from the English crown and became free and independent states. From that point until the ratification of the US Constitution, states legally issued coinage.

Section 8 of the Constitution gave the US Congress the power to coin money and expressly forbade states from doing so in Section 10.

The Constitution was ratified by the states between 1788 to 1790.

Massachusetts ratified the US Constitution on February 6, 1788, after which it would not have been legal for this State to issue this coin, but this was likely not enforced because the federal government did not get its act together to coin money until 1792 when the Mint opened in Philadelphia.

Looks like NGC didn't appreciate the little crustiness on the reverse. VF30 would have been better. Thanks for all the comments. Ed

Thanks for sharing. Coin was a little dark so I wanted to see what the finest know coin of this type looked like... so I pulled up the Norweb example. You're in good company Ed!

Great! Corrosion is better than "improperly cleaned" in the case of an old colonial for sure.
