hlynn, think you mean along front of coat, if so that's MDD, master die doubling...happens on most 1968 coins, all mints.

Even tho coin has some Scratch's, still nice, I don't see many that shiny here in MO, all really dull, to me that'd be a keeper!

Edit: see it now, date, that's MD, may even be Die Deterioration, but isn't doubled die.

much glare. it is covering what you want to show. But the 1968-1972 cents had a lof of machine damage on them. So that is probably what you are seeing.

Also the reason the motto is touching the rim is from a very worn master hub. The next year (1969) they made a new master hub that year. The old master hub was spread outwards from many years of use.

Yes MD= Machine Doubling - Mechanical Doubling or the term I prefer, Machine Damage as the devices were altered after/during the strike. The devices were formed, but because of die movement, they were then damaged. Leaving the devices reduced in size by damaging them. This damage removes the design often flattening a portion of the devices. The removes the images ability to show light to dark tapering of the devices. Often a portion is now flattened and just show all the same color on the affected area.

Note how the normal devices were flattened on the left image. Then note the affected areas are all the same color as the normal design was altered. The light to dark color is now missing when compared with the un-affected areas. On the right image you will note how the hub doubling creates an enlarged device depending on how far the spread is between the hubbings.
