Poll Question
This is an educational post for others to avoid PVC infected coins. You should read if you want to use the poll.I am not going to point a finger at this seller and flog him publicly here in this thread but I may post in discouraged sellers. I bought a couple wheat cents that arrived in a kind of flip I have not seen for decades. These coins were probably in there that long. ebay item 253073273007I knew right away after getting the first one out it felt sticky and what the issue was. The second one was even worse. Now granted, I am out $2.25 which is not that big of a deal but the seller has 1367 other coins listed for sale. The flips were not shown with the images in the listing so look closely at these images and I will explain what to look for. The rims have a gooey darkish green look to them, the coins themselves have a very thin film covering them. When held by the rim properly, they are downright disgusting. Like they were in a greasy kitchen for months on a shelf above the stove. They are soaking in acetone and I thinking they will be OK after another hour or so. But imagine if I bought a 1909 S and a 1924 D instead for 50 times as much money? Then I would be mad. The flips are the soft plastic of course, you can see where the coins have been and the plastic has reacted with the copper. Stay away from a coin in the soft pliable somewhat warped looking flips like this. So I have included a poll on what you would do. I am not going to return them, it isn't worth the hassle and this guy knows what is going on here. I am sure he has many coins in these holders from a lot he has bought. I mean, I won't be the only one getting slimy coins from him. So what do you think? Thanks Results

I'd post his name here on CCF and comment in his feedback but I could only vote once.

Almost put "other", because I would have more than one! My first step would be to message seller, hopefully a discourse could be achieved to satisfy both parties. Possibly even to have seller either note these items in older storage on sales description, clean up himself or offer cleaning tips for buyers. These are damaged items, should be sold as such. I know as a seller, if I didn't know this was damaging the coin, I would appreciate being made known that fact, nicely, so I could do what is necessary to rectify MY error....including notifying former customers of this now known fault.

Thanks guys, I can go that route and tell this guy about his slime packets. But a seasoned coin dealer would know. I think he knows as he took the coins out of the holders, and took images and put them back in the same holder. If I spotted it right away, he would have to at some point pulling the coins for pictures and putting them right back in. The green ring sticks out pretty obvious on the empty flips. What concerns me is that he has similar small cents that are listed for much more than these two. They look to have similar issues and my guess is that he bought a collection as these are in these holders and is selling them as he bought them. Yes, he should remedy his product and/or disclose it, but I am going to give it a little more time to think about. I too have sold on ebay, and I describe my items as best I can. I could not sell coins like this. I don't want my money back, I honestly am just giving a heads up on these holders and how to help buyers ( especially CCF members ) to avoid PVC infected coins. I don't want to start a problem with this guy, but I agree he needs to get a message. These lots look infected 253083211058 253099548040 as does this 14S for $33.90 253115253482 and this 1909 V.D.B. for $11.75 253120961400 and this lot wins the prize 253128643647for $3.90 There are others, but that's enough to make my point.

I took the advice of the poll and wrote the seller this message and sent the image of the flips with the green "ring" showing on the plastic. Quote: This was not a big transaction, so I don't want to return the coins but want to make you aware that you have some coins you are selling in old PVC slime producing flips. Perhaps you bought a quantity of coins to resell, or you are selling an old collection you have bought yourself long ago. The two Lincolns I received were taken out of the flips that I show an image of here and you can see that they reacted with the plastic. They have green slime on the rims and they have a thin film covering the entire coins. I see you have quite a few other small cents for sale that appear to be "infected" and some are considerably more expensive listings. I do think this issue will hurt your reputation and sales in the future. What you do about this is up to you, but I think it is only fair to you and your customers that I let you know my concern.

I like it. Nicely written, very professional sounding, and you're not accusing him of accusing him of anything.

By posting the ebay listings, you've already identified the seller. He's been active on ebay for over a year and by the note was associated with the same seller previously. Feedback of 1101 and 1 negative. I don't think this is anything that can't be fixed by reholdering them as he photographs them for sale with an quick acetone dip in-between.

He didn't dip them, I had to, which reminds me, it's time to take them out of the soak. I'll post pictures of "after" if I can do any justice with my camera. No response from seller yet. Late edit: The 46 will not clean up without some persuasion which would affect the surface, the 42 came out better but these coins do not live up to my standards as "problem free". Here are new pictures which are brightened to show "after" images better.

I voted to message the seller, which I see you already did. If he responds positively and actually seems like he will make an attempt to stop using the PVC flips, then I would think to just leave it at that. If he responds negatively and does nothing to change it (or if he does not respond at all), then I would post his name in the thread you mentioned. On a side note, I did not know such a thread actually existed. Good to know.

I understand your rant ,and I voted to contact the seller about using PVC flips . But to tell you the truth ,I would not have bothered buying these two coins at all . What exactly were you looking for , EF-45 ,AU ,BU ,something else ? Just not the Lincolns I would have sunk my teeth into .

I wanted to assemble a year set for 1942 and 1946 since I already had some of the others singles. Then dummy me, I discovered I had already done 1942. I will be making another year set for 1946. It was just a whim. I see this 1946 Lincoln has been stabbed in the neck anyway. Like the other 4 votes to move on have suggested, I made a stink, named him in discouraged sellers and will certainly move on but I'll give it til Tuesday evening to get a reply and if no reply, leave a neutral feedback mentioning PVC so others might see it and be aware. There's a lot of other good stuff than this I will fill my days with, that's for sure.

Got a message back and was in a positive tone. I did what I could, hope he does not sell them or if he does he makes a note of the issues in the sales. He wrote: Quote: Thanks for the advise, I will start working on that in the next few days. They are in 2X2 boxes with all the other coins in that particular 30-50 coin grouping for that sales end date. So I have 52 2X2 boxes to look through. Now all is well in the world and I have let this go. I will ask to have this locked.
