In 1926 most of the denominations had two different portraits for the coins dated 1926.

I have tried and cannot tell the two apart.

Can someone give me a reliable method to do so?

They wear differently. The earlier portrait is higher relief and tends to wear quite flat by the time the coin gets down to Fine condition, but the modified effigy coins usually have a well-defined ear and some hairlines in the same condition. The designer's initials BM are quite large and prominent on the earlier portrait coins, especially the pennies, but on the modified effigy they are smaller, pushed towards the right and may be completely invisible if the coin is in VF or worse.

A good idea is to compare two coins that you know have different portraits, like a 1921 and a 1927 penny. Then, if you have a 1926 penny and are not sure which type it is, you should be able to identify it quite easily.

Thanks. I think I see it now.

So there is no actual size difference in the portrait?

Initially the Modified Head was the same size as the earlier portrait. But on some denominations - pennies, halfpennies and gold sovereigns - the modified head was reduced in size in 1928 to reduce ghosting - the outline of the portrait showed through on the reverse.
