I always buy the mint-uncirculated sets at the post office every year, but also try to save coins from circulation as well.
Over the years, there are several coins that have just never come my way in pocket change:
--the 1970 dime --the 1991 quarter (I know about the very low mintage) --the 2002 loonie --the 2013 twonie
All the others I've been able to find. You'd figure even with the low mintages for some of those coins, eventually I'd see one, but go figure...
Has anyone noticed that this year's 150th anniversary special coins have pretty well disappeared from circulation? I saw them for a brief while around April-May, but have seen none since. It seems that everyone's hoarding these - at least in Southern Ontario anyway. Luckily I managed to find one of each - except for the colored quarter.

The coloured Canada 150 coins are tough to find in circulation. I was at an RCM coin exchange during the summer and these were being snapped up and hoarded. Hopefully there will be more coin exchanges scheduled this year. Happy hunting!

Not sure why the 2002 loonie and the 2013 toonie should be that tough to find. Maybe if you go into a bank and buy 10 rolls of loonies and ten of toonies you might have some luck.
I have found the coloured quarters and toonies of 2017 that way too.

Quote: Not sure why the 2002 loonie and the 2013 toonie should be that tough to find. The 2002 loonie had a comparatively low mintage, about 2.3 million, and ARP is removing any that come back to the mint. So I can see that one may be difficult to find. No idea why the 2013 toonie is proving hard to find

2013 $2 should not be hard to find. Even the uncirculated ones are not too expensive.

I have the 2013 uncirculated twonie, but one has never come my way in circulation. Add the 2016 loonie (I have only the special one from that year).
When they mint the coins and circulate them, are they distributed roughly evenly throughout the country?

You didn't have any trouble getting the old style 2012 loonie and Toonie? they were my most difficult besides the 1991 quarter business strike.

I had been looking for the 1991 quarter every year with no luck. Until I found someone that kept all of his change. I asked to go through it and did find the 1991 quarter that I was looking for. I thought I had seen another one but not sure if I had put it aside. If so, I will take a look.

I have also found the old style of the 2012 toonie. I think I may have an extra one.

You can find a bajillion and two of the 150 anniversary nickels. I can guarantee you that.
For me, I have yet to come across a 1970 nickel. I am very much hoping to find one sooner than later. I wish you luck in your hunt as well!

when I was a kid, the 1983 quarter was the tough one to find.

the mint was on strike in 1970, so low mintages. I think I find maybe 2 a week of the 70's (going through over a thousand dollars of nickels though)

I still haven't seen the Vimy twonie in circulation. I did buy an uncirculated one from a dealer, but I wonder if this will be another scarce coin in circulation(?)
