Was looking for a certain coin today and found this. A wooden nickel souvenir that was handed out at a small local coin show to show that you were there. This coin show was only held one year by the "LNA" in Lorain, OH as it pretty much was a flop. It was held in a hall that was in a bad part of town and dealers were actually scared to bring their items for sale there. So, few dealers and few people at the door spelled disaster for the promoters. I can't remember too much about it except these wooden nickles.
I actually have 2 but the other one's cellophane is too yellow to take pictures, it's a very miniscule history of coin collecting but any bit to read is better than nothing.

Mint Condition - in original packaging (enjoy)

The obverse shows some pitting and maybe signs of an over-polished die. The reverse is a nice strong strike and has a little "woodgrain" pattern going on. Overall, nice eye appeal so I'd say MS65.

I have a few of these from the late '60s for the General Dynamics Coin Club in Ft. Worth. That's a neat story, Mark. Thanks for sharing!

Funny - If it was hickory I would have thrown the so called Nickel into my fire to smoke the brisket! LOL!!

Hickory smoked with a hint of ink. Mmmmmm...

My off-hand guess would be poplar but, I'm not sure.

I'm not sure - there is no weight to it and the ink hasn't spread, - I was guessing really dried out Balsa!

Maybe it's "coin balsa" - 90% balsa, 10% poplar. Have you tried the tissue test?

P.S. I apologize for so many jokes but, I need some humor.

In this instance I might recommend getting it out of the TPG encapsulation. I usually don't ever want broken slabs but this might be the exception.

To follow up on your history, St. Michael Hall was used in 1977 for the SRS (State Revenues Society) annual gathering. Less than half the dealers who had already paid for their tables unloaded their inventory.

Policeman were assigned to escort buyers and sellers to their cars.
