I was looking over the new releases for September and came across the following review for the Great Seal of Canada gold-plated silver coin:

VERY DISAPPOINTED... great looking coin but why say Queen of Canada ... really? The Queen today is only emblematic to Canada ... too bad this spoiled everything good about this coin. Won't be buying this one...

This type of uninformed review always disappoints me. The reviewer appears not to understand a couple of key facts:

1) Canada is a constitutional monarchy. QE II is recognized as the nation's Head of State and is officially referred to as the Queen of Canada. It has been this way since 1953 per Canada's Royal Style and Titles Act.

2) The design of the coin depicts the current Great Seal of Canada - an official symbol of Canada. The Seal is specific to Queen Elizabeth II and, as her official seal, naturally includes her official title -- "Queen of Canada." A coin meant to honor Canada's Great Seal can only accomplish its goal if it depicts it as completely and accurately as possible.

As her position is non-political in today's Canada, I understand (I think) the reviewer's reference to QE II being "only emblematic to Canada." Officially, however, the Queen is much more than that.

As such, complaining that the coin includes "Queen of Canada" in its design (and giving it a one-star rating as a result) seems to completely miss the mark in terms of understanding what the coin represents. At least it does in my opinion.

From my perspective, the coin is an attractive and fitting reminder of one element of Canada's long-standing historical association with the Crown of England.

Your thoughts?

The same wording, and almost the same reverse appeared on a $300.00 gold coin in 2003.

I personally am fine with it. The kings and queens of England, Great Britain, the UK, have been on Canadian coinage all along except for some early tokens and maybe some others. I hope it stays that way.

High relief gold enhancement - its a fantastic looking coin...minimalistic design contributes to its beauty.
The 1 star rating chap missed the historical boat in his analysis.

The reviewer is from QC. Not exactly a bastion of pro-monarchists there.

Politics aside, this is a nice looking coin and I almost went for it. Selective gold plating on high relief is a first, according to the RCM.

I'm originally from Quebec and at first I didn't think much of the nomenclature. But now that we are discussing the issue I can see why some Quebecois would be ticked off by this.

Great coin nonetheless IMO.
