From what I've seen on this forum from the experts, and mind you, I do not have a trained eye, this 1977 Washington quarter could be a massive die failure so substantial that pieces of the die can be seen embedded in the quarter and giving merit to its classification as a Cud considering that it affects the rim perimeter...or it could just be a beat up coin. Metal ridges are present that go above ththe surface of the coin in the affected areas, but I have no clue how to tell if this is a minting error or PMD. Any and all help would be appreciated and I've more than caught the bug in these respects. Value opinions would also be appreciated.
Rest in Peace

Simply severe damage. Those gouged edges might even be intentional rather than by accident. I'm not accusing you of that. We see some pretty beat coins almost every day.

But we also see some great finds, too.

damaged coin. Could have found its way into an industrial dryer and bounced around in there. Could have gotten jammed in a vending machine or roll counting machine. Could have been hit with a hammer.

Keep your eyes peeled; errors are out there!
