This looks to be possibly a religious medal.

I am not so much interested in the monetary value since it's probably similar to trying to sell a bible which is typically not allowed.

It would be nice to know the approx year of minting and what group of people most likely created it.

thx

Looks Catholic to me, with the Spanish inscriptions and halos on Mary and Jesus. The M-shaped monogram on the first pic reminds me of Mexico City's mint mark. Otherwise, I'm not sure--hope others weigh in too.

The inscriptions appear to be in English: Sacred Heart Have mercy on us

Spence, if you Google "Miraculous Medal" or "Medal of the Immaculate Conception," you'll find explanations regarding the M/cross combo.

Definitely Catholic. Looks very similar to the Saint medallions/pocket tokens. The ones that say 'Saint _______ watch over us'

Did you test for silver content? Most of the tokens I find are sterling. This one is ostensibly much older than the tokens I'm referencing.

The equivalent of a tourist token, except specifically for Catholics.

I need to drink my coffee before I start posting in the morning. I saw "sin" and thought it was Spanish for "without"...

@bob, you are right about that being a cross on the M, so not Mexico City.

At least I got the right religion.

I scratched the medallion on an acid test smooth stone and applied 14k test acid.

The metal only partially dissolved.

While scratching it on the stone I noticed that this medal easily bent when I applied pressure making me assume that its composition is Pb(lead).

Does the fact that its composition appears to be lead provide a better idea of the time period of its fabrication?

I am unaware of any medals being made of Pb that are intended to be worn around one's neck as evidenced by the small hole on the top portion: Pb poisoning etc.
