That 2017D is a fantastic example of what is called a "squeeze/pop" of the die. Since going to the "single squeeze" making of cents, the presses as the name implies squeezes the planchet instead of stamping like of old. If the dies are lightly out of alignment, a twisting motion occurs to line up, this makes a loud popping noise...let's 'em know they gotta fix it!
