Just A Couple Questions About Coin Photography

nick56x New Member United States 47 Posts	Posted 09/19/2017 9:01 pm Morning/evening everyone, I know that this question has been asked a quadrillion times (a bit of an exaggeration, but hopefully you'll understand my point) but I am in the process of reorganizing my medium sized coin collection (only around six hundred-ish) and this time, I am wanting to include photographs of my coins with each entry that I have in a database that I created. In the past, I fiddled around with coin photography, but I never got any results that I was happy with and I gave up in frustration. Though, the question at hand is this: What is a cheapish setup that I can create to get quality photographs of my collection? I do have a DSLR camera that I purchased several years ago for nature photography, with it, I 55-200 mil lens. Obviously, that can become tricky with lighting and such. What recommendations do you guys have from this point on? I'm open to suggestions, other threads that I may have missed over the many hours of me searching on how to do this. Thanks! Tootallious Rest in Peace United States 1559 Posts	Posted 09/19/2017 10:04 pm I have been advised by a professional photographer to take the pictures under natural lighting (outside) and to place the coins on a dull gray surface. He told me that the gray surface will deflect the reflection from the sun away from the lens of the camera giving you a more crisp detailed picture. I have not tried this as I do not own a DSLR camera. However, I have seen his photos and they are the best I have ever seen of coins. I hope this helps. pepactonius Pillar of the Community United States 9395 Posts	Posted 09/19/2017 10:43 pm There's a thread on the "$400 setup", which works quite well for coin imaging. Since you already have the DSLR (the most expensive part), your cost should be well under $400. If your lens is good at closeup photography, you could save even more. I use something that's functionally similar to the $400 setup, although it cost more than $400. Report this Post to the Staff
