no mint mark because it was struck at the Philadelphia mint. They just started putting the P mint mark on the cent coinage starting this year - 2017. Your cent was struck on a copper plated zinc planchet and what you are seeing is the copper layer being worn or scraped away reveling the underlying zinc.

Yep I agree on both points with @mark1959. Definitely a spender!

There is a viable reason they have acquired the name we love to hear of "Zincolns", or my favorite "stinking zinkin"! The plating of the planchets(blanks) is a very thin copper over a zinc core(97%). Sometimes during production or circulation the plating is split, worn away exposing the zinc to air and corrosive elements which quickly cause the zinc to "rot". This coin will "dissolve" within the next few years so you best spend it fast!

to the family!

It's just so ugly. I like the term stinking zinging. That's funny, however; very much an eye sore. Thank you all for your help. Lord knows I. Need all I can get for a bit.!

I thought that Philly was hitting them all with the big P by 1984? I did think that it was a sort of migration from the 1982 transitions. Hmm I might need to slow down a bit and absorb all info. Just so excited about dirty gross coins, that have an unexplainable beauty about them. I am a retired Rockhound.

2017 is the first year the cent has ever had a P mintmark.
