Is this seen very often? Could it be because of cleaning? Or just somehow missed getting signatures originally? Just wondering as I am a new collector and have seen several note examples without signatures.

I have only seen this on Large size Nationals, and Obsolete remainders (not issued/signed)
Typically, over time and possible washings some signatures fade. On the other hand, some bold/fancy signatures remain easily readable and even add to the eye appeal of the note.

Keep in mind that a lot of large size nationals were stamped signatures, not all were pen signed, some were a combination of both, at the bank. Someone will be sure, but I believe small size arrived already printed on the note? You see most Orig. and 1882 are penned. Don't see many that were not issued, many are just faded out. They may have been destroyed if not signed/used. Steve and other Experts needed here!

Maybe, or are those marks just security threads?

Steve's Heritage reference suggests that these notes were not signed in the first place.

You must be right, but to see no trace at all seems somehow unlikely.

Large size notes were shipped to the bank in uncut, unsigned sheets. Signatures were then added by hand and the sheets cut apart. As Babysitr has correctly written some signatures were stamped, others were pen signed.
During the Series 1902 era the banks could even have the officers' signatures engraved on the plate.
Another factor to consider is scans versus a photo. It is possible that a scan of stamped or signed signatures in a light color such as purple would appear faded.

Faded, yes, I have several (especially in purple), but with no trace, it would seem, on two notes from the same bank?

There are well over a dozen '02 PBs known for this bank, up to AU and even CU. I wonder if any other member might own one?
