Poll Question
I have a guideline to keep only one of each major type in my collection and am having a hard time trying to decide which of these two Seated Liberty half dollars to keep for my U.S. Type Set and would like to ask the forum members for their opinion. The 1840 is a good looking coin and has a fairly rare variety, FS-401, with two attributed through PCGS. The 1841-O has been in my corral for a couple of years. My intention was flipping the 1840, but finding the right buyer has been a struggle. The 1841-O would probably not garner much for the variety, WB-101, but more as a common. 1840 Reverse of 1839 50C Obv. Die Crack FS-401 AU55 (not yet submitted to CAC) 1841-O 50C WB-101 Large Mint Mark XF45 CAC

Without knowing much about varieties, I would keep the 1841 O simply because it has better detail on the reverse. But then the obverse on the 1840 is so much sharper. I had to vote for one or the other, but I can understand your dilemma. Tough call. I think it would be best to lay these out along with the rest of your type set and see which one blends in best since that is your goal. That mark at 3 o'clock obverse in the field of the 1841 O keeps staring at me though. It's kind of a tie. LOL

TNG, I respectfully disagree. The 1840 features much crisper details on the reverse. The wings on the eagle are vastly superior in sharpness. There is a softer spot in the shield than in the 1841, but as a whole, the 1840 is much sharper hence the higher grade.

I would definitely keep the 1840. It is, to me, a more attractive coin both aesthetically and because of the interesting yet rare die variety.

I missed that on first pass myself.

My eyes were instantly drawn to the 1840. Nice looking half.

Both are very nice, but the 1840 is a real beauty.

I would hold onto 1840, primarily because I am a variety collector, also in my opinion the details on the 1840 is more attractive to me than 1841.

An excellent example of why rules in collecting, even those that are self established, should always be open for change. Having goals is essential, in my book, for forming any type of collection. But I've changed enough must-dos that have always resulted in better choices down the line. This is my very long way of saying I'd keep them both

Ugh! You guys are killing me with the "keep 'em both". Maybe I will list them both and see which one sells first.

To be honest, I don't particularly like either one.

I guess I'm in minority here. I think 1841 has more personality, although 1840's obverse is very attractive.

I have to agree with Coconut Joe, the 40 may be a High D variety and sharper details, but just don't like the look. The 41 appeals more to me because it's not "perfect", or "special". If My type set was a "special variety" or Grade oriented" it may be different, but I like coins that say "I have a story to tell", "Been there, done that", not a "Lookit ME, lookit ME" coin.
