Does a Bar Wing carry any additional value over book for a circulated example? There's not enough information on Heritage to clarify things, although indications are that there isn't much of a premium.

I'm considering acquiring one, but if they're not too dear (as in 200% of normal), I'll wait for an MS example.

There are plenty of VAM collectors, and if you find the right person, these coins can fetch a good price, however, most times, a XF or lesser grade will not carry much of a premium.
Rest in Peace

Adding to what ND said, with relatively few exceptions, Morgan VAMs haven't normally carried a premium over others of the same date and mint. Bowers' in his " Red Book of Morgan silver dollars" states that while there were 57 obverse and 50 reverse dies used for the 1889, "no particularly memorable die varieties exist". This is not to say that a VAM collector somewhere would not pay more for this VAM if he didn't have it. HOWEVER (BIG "however"), PCGS lists two 1889 bar wing varieties in its list of VAMs it will attribute: http://www.pcgs.com/VarietyFAQ.htm . Since this attribution is relatively new on PCGS's part, it's still too early to determine how this will affect values, if at all.
