Wanted to put a small type set of nickels to fill 3 of the extra spaces in the Dansco album so searched some nickel bags (not those kind of nickel bags!) I had at the back of my safe. Found this Shield nickel - being a little smaller than the V nicks, buffs,and Jefferson's, I cut a small strip off of a plastic coin flip and put it in the regular sized nickel hole. It acted as a mini spring and held the Shield nickel in just fine! But any body care to grade it? it has that nick on the shield.

These can be difficult to grade. The scratches on the obverse detract for my eye. High VF. That's a pretty nice coin to find in a bag sitting at the back of a safe.

VF35 based on stars and shield lines; shot at XF40. The scratches on the shield do slightly detract from the eye appeal, but overall, the coin presents well enough.

Those are contact marks and somewhat agree with jpbone but will say it's more an XF45. The marks take a bit but the stars just barely show the lines, denticles OK and upper shield still has it's lines. Might have been an AU w/o nicks. Now get one of these!

Great idea and looks terrific! I would think I would value it at an XF40 level. The stars were just worn on the dies or weak strike maybe but I usually grade these by the detail in the leaves. You can find weaker stars in higher grades and stronger in lower.

xf maybe au details scratched. Nickels are pretty light and hard. it would have to come in contact with a coin dropped from the empire state building to create contact marks that large. I love 67s.
